Lake County (mostly around Aunt Mary's Place -- Mary Foley Murphy)
Mom and dad both spent quite a bit of time around horses. San Francisco at that time (20s-30s) boasted a cattle ranch from Glen Park up to the saddle area between Twin Peaks and "Juvee". Mom used to ride horseback quite a bit where Henry Laberge worked - she and Cecilia Seibel McLaughlan were there many a day in the thirties. Below are a few from the Lake County days - the big horses are either Morgans or Percherons that were used for ploughing the fields.

Mom and dad spent a good deal of time with photography - in particular, hamming it up for the camera. Dad always had a look whereas mom usually just smiled (she would tell us to say "onion" when we were in a shot). Mom took a photography class - she said it was Ansel Adams (I will post it with a link later).
I noticed a big difference in the pictures before and then after the war. Of course they were more serious - but it also seemed that all the country aged just a bit more. As a kid around mid 1960, I remember talking with Dad and relatives about WWII, but the seriousness does not hit you until you read their letters and then remember the movies about the war you saw as children. Some of our uncles were in the South Pacific but couldn't tell details at the time. Dad's friend Joe Rosenthal took the famous picture at Iwo Jima (raising of the flag). But Joe was also just a guy I would see a t events for the Association of Catholic Newsmen.
