Sr. Mary Roberta

Sr. Mary Roberta was my third grade teacher at St. Gabriels in the Sunset/Parkside district of San Francisco.  She was about 70 when she taught me, and I was a challenge for her.  While not appropriate many of you might say (or more than appropriate some of you might say), she tied my hands to the desk with linen strips - I liked to wander.  Mom, who was often in the school helping with reference skills for the classes using World Book Encyclopedia and the "look it up club", would often find me in the principal's office.

Anyway, Sr. Mary Roberta, of the Sisters of Mercy, was a good friend of the family.  When Maureen and I went to visit her in the eighties, she asked to see my drivers license and then slapped my hand (gently) when she saw the horrible penmanship.  She then asked if we had gone to Mass that day - we had.  Then she asked "What was the gospel about?"  Luckily I knew.
